The Kappa Alpha Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has proudly served DeKalb County since 1987. Through decades of impactful service—including financial literacy education, youth mentorship, breast cancer awareness, and men’s mental health advocacy—the chapter has remained steadfast in its commitment to uplifting the communities it serves.
On December 6, 2025, the chapter continued that legacy by hosting its annual Awards and Scholarship Gala, an evening dedicated to celebrating excellence in leadership, service, and community impact. The gala is named in honor of two distinguished members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.: civil rights icon and late Congressman Rep. John Lewis and legendary entrepreneur Herman J. Russell.
Surrounded by family, friends, community partners, and supporters, the chapter awarded scholarships to three outstanding young men—Ca’Shun Barr, Sean Kang, and Jaiden Blackwell—recognizing their academic achievement, leadership, and promise for the future.
In addition to scholarships, the evening honored Brothers of the chapter whose dedication exemplifies the ideals of Phi Beta Sigma:
Chapter Awards
- Gary Granderson – President’s Award
- Luther Hobbs – Unsung Hero Award
- Brian Pauling – Rising Star Award
Directors’ Awards
- Dr. Sinclair Grey – Bigger and Better Business
- Corey Sapp – Sigma Beta Club
- Dr. Desmond Coble – Education
- Phillip Nelson – Social Action
The gala also recognized distinguished community leaders whose service and leadership continue to positively impact Georgia and beyond:
- CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson, DeKalb County
- Senator and Gubernatorial Candidate Jason Esteves
- Senator Kenya Wicks
- CEO Rosalyn Merrick, Habitat for Humanity
The 2025 Awards and Scholarship Gala was a powerful reflection of the chapter’s enduring commitment to Service for Humanity, celebrating scholarship, brotherhood, and community partnerships that drive meaningful change.
